| We went to Père Lachaisse Cemetery with
Meg and Ron. This year we did the Clark Griswold version of the
tour. We hit the Oscar Wilde plot, where Meg had a brain fart and
forgot the Importance of Being Earnest. We had to seek advise from a
Swiss father-daughter pair. We also hit the Jim Morrison grave.
Then we went for libations. Paris has been called a Moveable Feast.
We have turned it into a Moveable Drunk. Unfortunately, the cafe
that we stopped at outside of the cemetery was a tad smoky, so we hopped
on the subway and went to l'Arch de Triomphe. We found a pizzeria
to eat at, and drink at. Ron decided to go climb the arch, Bless his
Pointed Little Head, but they had closed it down to tourists by the time
that he got there. The arch is at the top of the Champs-Elysées, which is the Mecca for consumerism. Auto manufacturers have some great showrooms. There is also a place dedicated to beer. Culturebiere has several floors of all things BEER. There are carousels around the city for the holidays. And there is a Ferris Wheel. Ron got some good pics. The dynamic duo wanted to continue walking down the Champs and Marsha and I wanted to rest our barking dogs. The kids got to ride the Merry-Go-Round. We got to ride the subway. Christmas Eve is crowded. We went out for dinner, always an exercise in diplomacy, and had to cross through the square in front of Notre Dame. It was wall to wall people and Police. There was a massive line to get through the metal detectors to get inside to worship. We had stopped at our local boulangerie, bakery, for bread and rolls for breakfast. There were cafes picking up dozens of baguettes for Christmas. Six in the evening, and the bread was fresh from the oven. That is some sort of heaven...on Christmas Eve. Marsha was right, the bakery did have fruit preserves to accompany the bread. It is currently after Noon Christmas Day and we are just sitting around talking. A little food, a little coffee, some dates that were a gift from the local grocer. "Jesus was born in the land of dates, you know" we were told. Christmas Day is being approached on a "Need To Do" basis. I know that we will need to eat, so that seems to be the only goal. Joyeux Noel!!
