OK...I am waiting on a very slow, or so it seems, BROADBAND Wi-Fi connection in a cafe for artistes. The kid at the piano is ok, and there are 3 intense games of chess going on. How do these people stay open?

They are a marvelous oriental family...the net access is free, and I bought one cup of coffee.  I have a little trouble getting the wireless network to recognize me or me to recognize it.  I start a conversation with an American from California.  He is using his Apple laptop and we figure out that the access code numbers were not transcribed legibly, but hell, for free, we got no complaints.  He heard the low hum of the fan in my laptop and made a coment about it.  I teased him about the snobbery of Apple users and their reputations as the "Parisians" of the computing world.  We talk of travel and home and movies and music.  He could have been Hemingway for all I know.  The salons of the new millennium are cyber cafés.  This is where the social revolution begins.

Notes from the next day:
I closed down my laptop at about 23:15 (11:15 pm to you yanks) and packed it away.  Upon leaving, I pressed about 3€ into the manager's hand.  He seemed to be the manager and maybe 15 years old.  He politely told me NON, and I confirmed "oui" and added "merci beaucoups" for the net access.  Maybe his parents think that the environment is ideal for their kid's education or are some sort of "Support the Students and Artists" missionaries.  They are not the Waltons (Walmart not Walton's mountain, nor Krocs (McDonalds) or the Hiltons.  Once again...I relied on the kindness of strangers.

Remove all doubt to email me.
